The Brazilian soccer sector has been rocked by allegations of match-fixing. Santos defender Eduardo Bauermann is one of the players under investigation. The Goiás Public Prosecutor’s Office is analyzing more than 20 matches from the previous season. The authorities are beginning to point to the involvement of some soccer players in illegal activity.
Bauermann is being investigated for premeditatedly receiving cards during matches. The defender allegedly accepted an offer of 50,000 reais, the equivalent of approximately 10,000 US dollars. That’s to receive cards, intentionally, on the pitch. One of the matches most scrutinized by the commission is the draw between Santos and Avaí, in which Bauermann received a warning. He is also being investigated for organizing his expulsion in the game against Botafogo, against which he protested vehemently.
There has been no official statement from Bauermann about the allegations. Rumors are circulating that Santos Club will make an announcement in the next few hours. The news has shocked the Brazilian soccer community, and it is hoped that the authorities will take swift action to punish the players found guilty.
The manipulation of results has long been a scourge in the soccer sector and undermines the integrity of the sport. The Brazilian authorities have been investigating cases of match-fixing for some time. This latest event is a clear reminder that sport must remain vigilant in its fight against corruption. The allegations against Bauermann are particularly serious given his high profile as a central defender for Santos, one of Brazil’s most famous clubs.
