Brighton are close to securing the signing of Watford star João Pedro for a record fee of just under £30 million, according to the latest reports. The Seagulls have acted quickly to sign one of the Premier League’s standout players this season.
After weeks of negotiations, the two clubs have reached an agreement that will see Pedro move to the Amex Stadium for a club record fee, and the Brazilian striker will sign a contract until June 2028.
Having joined Watford in 2020, the 21-year-old has scored 24 goals in 109 appearances for the Championship side, including 11 goals this season.
Brighton’s technical director David Weir confirmed the development, saying that the Brazilian would complement the Seagulls’ current front line.
“John has been our long-term target and has also attracted a lot of interest from across Europe,” Weir said, according to the BBC.
“He’s a bright young talent with a nose for goal. He will complement our current attacking line very well,” added David.
Brighton are shaking up the transfer market as they prepare for next season. The club is hoping to secure European soccer for the first time in its history.
Roberto de Zerbi’s side have agreed a free signing for veteran midfielder James Milner from Liverpool , who is set to join the club at the end of the season.
The Seagulls are currently sixth in the Premier League standings with 55 points from 32 games, jumping into the Europa League places after their latest 1-0 win over Manchester United on Friday.
What’s more, the Amex side have played two games less than fifth-placed Liverpool, who are only four points ahead.
Although Brighton have been a surprise package since De Zerbi took over and Graham Potter left for Chelsea, they were recently eliminated by United in the FA Cup semi-final on penalties. Securing European soccer next season would be a huge boost for the club.
