Paris Saint-Germain have suspended their best player and Argentinian leader, Lionel Messi, for two weeks after he went to Saudi Arabia without the club’s consent.
The incident occurred in the midst of PSG’s defeat to Lorient on Sunday, during which Messi played 90 minutes. Messi will not be able to take part in any training sessions or matches with the club as a result of his suspension.
Although it was reported that Messi had asked PSG for permission to travel to Saudi Arabia to carry out some commercial work, his request was denied.
Messi’s two-year contract with PSG expires this summer, and a return to his former club, Barcelona, has been discussed with the club’s vice-president, Rafael Yuste, who revealed in March that some negotiations had begun behind the scenes.
In his 71 appearances in all competitions for PSG, Messi contributed 31 goals and 34 assists, winning the Ligue 1 title last season.
Messi’s punishment means he will miss PSG’s next two league matches against Troyes and Ajaccio.
PSG are looking to win their eighth Ligue1 title in a total of 11 seasons, and are five points clear of second place with just five games left to play.
