England beat Brazil 4-2 in a thrilling penalty shoot-out to win the first Women’s Final title in front of a packed Wembley Stadium on Thursday. Chloe Kelly took the penalty that won the match. The two teams drew 1-1 after regulation time, with Euro 2022 hero Kelly winning to seal another historic title.
England dominated from the start against a vigorous but injury-hit Brazilian side, with 83,132 fans cheering on the English. The hosts looked on course for a narrow 1-0 win, having led the game thanks to a first-half goal from Ella Toone that put Sarina Wiegman’s side in front.
Lauren Hemp and Alessia Russo struggled to create clear-cut chances, and although Wiegman’s team deserved the opening goal, the second half got in the way completely when Barcelona striker Geyse almost got the equalizer. England were almost holding on to victory when Brazilian player Andressa Alves equalized after coming off the bench in the 93rd minute, taking the match to penalties.
In the penalty shoot-out, England won 3-1 in no time thanks to Georgia Stanway, Rachel Daly and Alex Greenwood.
Kerolin scored for Brazil to keep them alive, although Kelly – who had scored the winning goal at the same venue during last year’s European Champions – missed her shot and sealed the victory for her opponents.
This is England’s second trophy in 2023. In February, they won the Arnold Clark Cup. The latest win helped England women extend their unbeaten run to 30 games. They are still unbeaten under their new coach, Wiegman, with the team looking to build momentum ahead of the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand later this year.
