São Paulo’s director of soccer, Carlos Belmonte, recently provided information about the club’s future plans, possible player acquisitions and the state of the current squad. With the 2023 season paused and São Paulo’s aspirations diminishing, the board is preparing to make important decisions.
The director revealed that planning meetings have already begun, involving the coaching staff and scouts, to assess possible acquisitions and departures of players. However, Belmonte recognizes that this process is ongoing and won’t be completed in a week, especially since the transfer window is closed.
An urgent need highlighted by Belmonte is a center forward to serve as Calleri’s backup. Although Calleri and Erison are available, injuries have limited Erison’s participation, making it necessary to assess his future at the club.
Belmonte emphasized the importance of maintaining a reasonable team size due to the numerous competitions they take part in. The prospect of the 2024 Copa America further underlines the need for a balanced squad.
As far as the defensive line is concerned, São Paulo are happy with the five defenders they have, including Arboleda and Beraldo as starters. However, the team remains open to any offers that may arise.
The director discussed a change in approach to player sales, emphasizing the importance of receiving fair value for their assets. This change allows São Paulo to better protect its players and secure better deals.
As for the possible re-election of president Julio Casares, Belmonte indicated that the soccer department will probably maintain its current structure under his leadership. They plan to maintain their strategy for the next three years, building on recent successes.
São Paulo’s focus for next season is to strengthen its squad, allowing it to compete more effectively in the Brazilian Championship and, at the same time, maintain its pursuit of national and international competitions.
Negotiations for players like David and Rafinha are still ongoing. His contributions to the squad are recognized, but the club will evaluate his performance closely before making any final decisions.
In short, São Paulo is carefully planning its future, with the aim of finding a balance between building a competitive team and preserving the club’s assets, while seeking success in national and international competitions.
