Newcastle United and Premier League legend Alan Shearer believes that Arsenal’s 1-0 win over Manchester City showed that the pair are, like last season, the main contenders for the title. Brazilian Gabriel Martinell scored the only goal of the game in the 86th minute and his club managed to beat City for the first time since 2015.
The achievement put Tottenham unexpectedly at the top of the table, but Shearer is unsure whether they can challenge for the title this season. Although the club has the added advantage of not taking part in European competitions this season.
Shearer noted in his BBC column Tottenham’s good start under Ange Postecoglou, but suggested that Harry Kane’s absence would have an impact at some point.
“I still think it will be just City and the Gunners fighting for the title at the end of the season, but for now only three points separate the top four, which gives them all hope,” Shearer wrote.
Shearer also spoke about how Liverpool have been keeping pace with the likes of Arsenal and City, but predicted that Jurgen Klopp’s side won’t be able to stay in contention for the title.
“Liverpool are also well ahead so far, but once again I’m not convinced that they’ll be able to stay in contention for the title. Jurgen Klopp’s team will always score goals because of the attacking players they have, but I still have my doubts about the defense“Shearer added.
After eight games, reigning champions Man City are in third place, as the league stopped for the international break. Manchester United are 10th in the table, while Chelsea are 11th.
