Manchester United hosted Crystal Palace at Old Trafford and the reigning champions looked to continue their resurgence after a difficult few weeks. Brazilian midfielder Casemiro was the scorer, while Alejandro Garnacho and Anthony Martial also scored to give United a clear victory.
Erik ten Hag’s men opened the scoring in the 20th minute when Garnacho was on hand to head home Digo Dalot’s cross. Rob Holding touched the ball, but it wasn’t enough to prevent the Argentinian from scoring. Dalot then shot from close range, but Sam Johnstone was equal to it. Facundo Pellestri was denied a goal by a Chris Richards free-kick.
Brazilian midfielder Casemiro received a corner from Mason Mount, the former madridista was left alone, unmarked, and his header ended up in the back of the net.
Dean Henderson had been substituted at the start of the first half due to injury, and Johnstone did his best to prevent his team from falling further behind, clearing Dalot’s cross off the line. Casemiro provided an assist after the restart, finding Martial with a perfect pass, the Frenchman did the rest and United were on their way to the fourth round.
André Onana made a smart save to stop Jean-Philippe Mateta’s goal, Johnstone stopped Johnny Evans’ goal and Onana made another save to stop Mateta’s goal. Johnstone saved Garnacho’s long-range shot and the match ended 3-0.
“Oh, it’s a good night, as you said. And I think we played very well and dominated the game. That’s what we were looking for” Ten Hag told MUTV after the victory.
“And we took a step forward at Burnley, in the way we defended, in the way we did it, and in our togetherness today with the ball, and we took another step. So there is still a lot to be done, but we are making progress and moving forward” he added.
Brazilian midfielder Casemiro was very impressive, scoring one goal and assisting another, as he played the entire match.
