Renowned former NBA player and executive Magic Johnson, who is closely linked to the Los Angeles Lakers, has made suggestions that he could be considering buying the New York Knicks. Johnson, who has strong ties to the Lakers, stated in a recent interview that the Knicks are the only NBA team he would consider buying.
During a talk at a YMCA event in New York, Johnson revealed his unique feeling towards the Knicks. It would be interesting, he thought. The only team I’d probably think of is the New York Knicks”. This is an extraordinary revelation from a man who has often turned down opportunities to own other NBA clubs, including the Golden State Warriors, Detroit Pistons and Atlanta Hawks, in order to avoid any possible friction with his beloved Lakers.
Magic Johnson’s passion for the Knicks stems from the passionate and informed basketball fans who frequent Madison Square Garden. “I love coming to New York, going to the Garden and watching the Knicks play” he said. I like to be among fans who are intelligent and loyal to their club, as Knicks fans are. They are astute basketball enthusiasts”. Johnson emphasized that the Knicks would be the only exception to his firm support for the Lakers.
Despite his curiosity, Johnson said he had not discussed the possibility of ownership with Madison Square Garden CEO James Dolan. He expressed his happiness as a Lakers fan and his affection for the team, where he previously worked as president of basketball operations for two seasons until stepping down in 2019.
However, Magic Johnson left the door open, indicating that if a chance with the Knicks started to happen, he would seriously consider it. “That’s something you’d really have to think about, in terms of being a minority owner of this team,” he said. “But other than that, I’d stick with the players and my role now, just as a fan, I’m happy just doing it with the players, again, I’m blue and gold.“
Johnson, who was instrumental in LеBron Jamеs’ move to the Lakers, believes his former team has the ability to win another NBA championship in the near future. “I think they’re going to be the best team in the West this year” he said firmly, reiterating his unwavering support for the Lakers.
