Thiago Silva has been unhappy at Chelsea after the team’s shocking start to the season saw them win just one game in six so far. After manager Mauricio Pochettino was forced to defend the Brazilian before the game against Aston Villa, the veteran conceded possession and was at fault for Ollie Watkins’ goal.
Silva is one of the most experienced players in the dressing room, but instead of leading the club as captain, Pochettino gave the armband to Connor Gallagher, saying that a player like Thiago doesn’t need the label of captain to be a leader.
However, the 39-year-old has not been in his best form in recent games and there are several reports that the former Paris Saint-Germain is unhappy at Stamford Bridge.
Pochettino countered these claims by saying that the club extended the veteran defender’s contract only because he wanted to stay in west London.
“Why is Thiago Silva here? Because he wants to be here. He stayed because the club wanted to keep him. They extended the contract. I think Thiago Silva was aware of the project when he signed an extension at the end of last season. He knew the plans for the future, but now you’re asking me things I can’t answer. I wasn’t here when he extended his contract. He’s here because he wanted to stay and the club wanted to keep him” said the former Tottenham and PSG coach.
Meanwhile, Silva was at fault in the game against Villa for losing possession, which allowed Watkins to score. After the defeat, his wife used Twitter to express her disappointment at Chelsea’s poor form.
“I never thought it would be easy, but seriously, it’s much harder than I suspected,” wrote Belle Silva on X (formerly Twitter). Although the Brazilian is usually known for his discipline and defensive prowess, it remains to be seen how Thiago will react in the next few games amid rumors of unrest, as Chelsea are 14th in the table.
