In a significant development, Brazilian midfielder Bruno Guimarães has signed a new five-year contract with Newcastle United, extending his commitment to the club until 2028. However, the inclusion of a release clause, set at around 100 million euros, has caused concern among fans.
Bruno Guimarães has emerged as a key figure for Newcastle since his arrival in January 2022 from Olympique Lyonnais. In just a year and a half, he made 63 appearances and scored 10 goals, solidifying his status as an indispensable starter under the guidance of coach Eddie Howe. Howe was determined to secure their services in the long term.
However, the presence of a 100 million euro release clause has left fans apprehensive, especially in light of the substantial sums spent recently on players such as Declan Rice and Enzo Fernandez. There is a prevailing fear that Guimarães could easily leave if a substantial offer materializes.
Real Madrid expressed an interest in the midfielder during the summer transfer window, looking to bolster their midfield ranks in anticipation of the imminent departures of stars Luka Modric and Toni Kroos. Despite his high valuation, Guimarães could be tempted to join a top European club if his release clause is activated.
Newcastle are also in negotiations to extend the contract of another important player, Joelinton. The Brazilian arrived in 2019 for a record fee of 40 million euros and initially faced challenges adapting to the Magpies’ style. However, under Eddie Howe, Joelinton successfully reinvented himself as a defensive midfielder. His impressive performances earned him the title of Player of the Year for the 2021-2022 season and a call-up to the Brazilian national team.
As a key member of the Newcastle team, Joelinton is keen to extend his stay at St James’ Park. Talks with the club’s board began shortly after the announcement of Bruno Guimarães’ contract extension until 2028. Despite picking up an injury during an international match, the 27-year-old remains a vital component of Eddie Howe’s tactical set-up. With 159 appearances and 22 goals for the Magpies, Joelinton is a key asset.
Newcastle’s efforts to secure Joelinton’s future represent a significant commitment to retaining their top talent, echoing Callum Wilson’s recent contract extension. By guaranteeing Joelinton’s continued presence, the club is sending out a resounding message about its aspirations to consolidate its position among English soccer’s elite.
