A São Paulo fan since childhood, right-back Rafinha had the opportunity to lift a trophy as captain of the team he supports on Sunday, before ending his career – which is coming to an end.
At the age of 38, Rafinha admitted that he is in the final phase of his career after the 1-1 draw with Flamengo on Sunday.
“To close on a high note, my career is coming to an end. I’m going to stop. I’m heading towards the final stretch of my career. I needed to be champion with São Paulo, the team of my heart” he said, still on the pitch at the Morumbi stadium.
Rafinha’s contract with São Paulo runs until December and the club is keen to extend it. However, he has not yet confirmed his stay, but has mentioned that he plans to do his last season in 2024.
“I’m going to go home, drink my wine, play some samba, talk to my wife and family. I have a contract until the end of the year. Let’s see, I want to enjoy this moment, savor this title” he said.
“I won’t go on much longer; my body is already showing signs. The pain is increasing. By the middle or end of next year, I’ll stop. I want to rest; it’s been 22 years of soccer. I want to enjoy my family; my daughters are growing up” he concluded.
Rafinha’s candid confession comes after a significant milestone in his career. As a lifelong São Paulo fan, leading the team to the title was a dream come true for the veteran right-back. The draw against Flamengo may not have been the ideal way to win it, but it marked an exciting moment in his journey.
Having played soccer professionally for more than two decades, Rafinha is looking forward to stepping away from the demanding world of sport and devoting more time to his family. His future at São Paulo remains uncertain, but fans will fondly remember his contributions and dedication to the club.
