Atlético – Real Madrid – 3:1
Álvaro Morata stunned his former club Real Madrid by scoring twice as Carlo Ancelotti’s men lost for the first time in this new campaign, suffering a 3-1 defeat in La Liga on Sunday. Antoine Griezmann scored Atlético’s other goal, while Toni Kroos scored the consolation goal for Real Madrid, who dropped to third place after the defeat.
Real made the short trip to the Wanda Metropolitano, but suffered an early setback when Morata opened the scoring with a header just four minutes into the match. Griezmann doubled the hosts’ lead in the 17th minute with another header, before Federico Valverde had a shot on goal saved by Jan Oblak.
Kroos scored a wonderful goal from the edge of the box to put his side 2-1 down at half-time (at the same time, in the 44th minute, Camavinga’s goal was disallowed for offside). Morata scored a minute after the restart with another header and Real were 3-1 down. Despite their best efforts, Ancelotti’s side were unable to complete another comeback and Atlético Madrid held on for the three points. Also, in the 54th minute, Hermoso hit the crossbar from a corner kick.
Brazilian full-back Rodrygo failed to make any impact on the game, despite playing the entire match. Young full-back Samuel Lino shone once again, keeping the opposition attackers at bay and also providing an assist before being substituted in the 87th minute.
Betis – Cádiz – 1:1
Chris Ramos scored just before half-time and silenced Benito Villamarin with a header that caught Claudio Bravo in no man’s land. In the 52nd minute, Robert Navarro could have increased Cádiz’s lead, but he hit the post. Guido Rodríguez scored one of his first goals of the season with an acrobatic bicycle kick to bring Real Betis back level. Ayoze Pérez missed three good chances before Isco was denied the winning goal by Jeremias Ledesma.
Brazilian striker Luiz Henrique came on in the 61st minute but had no impact on the game, while his countryman Abner Vinícius also came on in the second half and was solid defensively. Willian José played in the first half.
