After Vasco da Gama’s 1-0 win over América-MG at the Independência stadium, América-MG midfielder Juninho drew attention to himself by claiming that Vasco are receiving preferential treatment in their fight against relegation. His remarks were made after a heated dispute in which Iago Maidana, of América-MG, was shown a red card, prompting Juninho to express his displeasure at the sending-off.
Juninho expressed his fears, saying: “It’s much easier for Vasco to avoid relegation than it is for América.” That’s exactly what they’re going to do. You can be sure that if they need to produce something or take measures to guarantee Vasco’s safety, they will. Everyone knows Brazilian soccer. We need to be vigilant during sports practice and prevent these things from happening. Vasco will not collapse because they will do everything in their power to prevent it.” Juninho’s comments, which aired on Premiere, highlighted his conviction in a possible bias that favors Vasco in the fight against relegation.
The match, which had been deliberated for the 15th round, became a critical clash in the fight against relegation. Juninho said that América-MG had dominated Vasco until the controversial sending-off of Iago Maidana. “Our first half was perfect,” he said, arguing that the referee’s judgment was incorrect. Vasco were unable to mount an effective reaction. I’m not criticizing anyone, but he didn’t miss the shot. Even so, I congratulate the Vasco fans on a fantastic night. Vasco won’t surrender; they won’t allow it. Of course, we have to be careful, but some actions, like the one Abbati took today, shouldn’t happen“, said Juninho.
América-MG’s defeat has put them in a dangerous position in the race against relegation. The team are currently 18 points behind Goiás, who are eight points clear of the dreadful Z-4 zone. Vasco’s victory in Belo Horizonte lifted the team out of the relegation zone, giving validity to Juninho’s accusations of special treatment.
