The fifth round of the Premier League has already seen plenty of drama in recent days, and on Sunday Arsenal and Chelsea were in action. While Chelsea were held to a 0-0 draw by Bournemouth, Arsenal managed a narrow 1-0 win over Everton. After their latest draw, Mauricio Pochhettino’s side are just three places above the relegation zone, in 14th place, while Arsenal have dropped to fourth, level on points with Tottenham and Liverpool.
Leandro Trossard leads Arsenal to victory over Everton
The Toffees hosted Mikel Arteta’s side on Sunday hoping to climb out of the relegation zone after a difficult start to the season under Sean Dyche. The hosts had yet to pick up a point and had failed to score a single goal at Goodison Park this season.
Trossard’s goal helped Arsenal return to London with all three points, although Brazilian full-back Gabriel Martinelli limped off, which could be a concern for Arteta.
Martinelli started the game on a high, putting the visitors ahead in the 20th minute when he scored his first goal of the season, but the Brazilian’s goal was disallowed by the VAR after an offside flag, as Eddie Nketiah had moved too far forward.
Idrissa Gueye and Ben White tested the opposition goalkeepers with shots from distance, but they didn’t have enough power and the game remained level at half-time.
Arsenal started the second half at a fast pace, and Fabio Viera’s cross flew over the goal before Everton defended well to stop Bukayo Saka’s cut-back. Jordan Pickford made a smart save to prevent Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard from scoring. At the other end, Arnaut Danjuma shot over the goal without giving David Raya much trouble from a corner kick.
Shortly after the half-hour mark, Arsenal took the lead with a fine team goal. After a short corner, the ball was passed back and forth and Saka fed the Belgian, who finished expertly.
Vitaliy Mykolenko’s trolley saved his team from conceding another goal, as Fabio Viera’s shot was blocked and Arsenal won the game comfortably.
Brazilian defender Gabriel Magalhaes played the entire match, but had little to do as he received a yellow card, while Martinelli only lasted 24 minutes before picking up an injury. Gabriel Jesus came on in the 66th minute and had a lot of work to do until the end.
Pressure mounts on Pochettino after Chelsea’s draw with Bournemouth
Chelsea traveled to the Vitality Stadium hoping to get their season back on track after the international break, but were held to a 0-0 draw by the Cherries.
Mykhailo Mudryk passed to Connor Gallegher at the start of the game, but the Englishman couldn’t get a decisive touch on the cross. Nicolas Jackson hit the post shortly afterwards and, at the other end, Robert Sanchez made an excellent save from Dango Ouattara’s shot.
The first half ended in a draw. Shortly after the restart, Mudryk was fouled on the edge of the box. Raheem Sterling hit the crossbar from the free-kick, Levi Colwill put the ball in the back of the net from the rebound, but the Englishman was offside.
Bournemouth also received a free-kick in the same position, but Philip Billing’s free-kick was blocked, before Sánchez made another important save to prevent Dominic Solanke from scoring against his former club.
Brazilian goalkeeper Neto capped off a brilliant match with a one-handed save to deny Cole Palmer a point for Bournemouth. Veteran Thiago Silva played the whole game and put in a solid display, as usual.
