On Sunday, Flamengo president Rodolfo Landim spoke about the progress of Gabigol’s contract renewal. The president was speaking as a guest on a talk show hosted by the CNN media network. In the interview with presenter João Vítor Xavier after the first leg of the Copa do Brasil final, Landim said it was time to start discussing renewing the striker. The subject of the player’s contract has been the epicenter of great expectations, and Landim confirmed that the club was actively looking to start negotiations with Gabigol for a new deal.
“It’s time to start discussing it. It all depends on the conditions that will be put on the table. If you ask me if I’d like to sign Neymar, I’d say yes, but not on the salary he earns there. As a player, I want Gabriel to renew, yes.” said the club president when asked about the veteran’s contract situation.
Rodolfo Landim also spoke about Gabigol’s legacy in Flamengo’s “Hall of Idols”. Landim shared details of a survey carried out during the launch of the club’s museum on who is the greatest idol of the red-black team. Gabigol came second, behind Zico. The president revealed that he said this to the striker in a recent conversation they had at the Ninho do Urubu training center, discussing the subject and his future at Flamengo.
“I spoke to him on his birthday and told him that he has an advantage, as he is only 27 and has many years ahead of him. If he wants to maximize this chance of becoming Flamengo’s greatest idol, it will just depend on whether he wants to stay at the club and strives to keep playing here.“
