Rafael Sobis, a two-time Brazilian Cup winner with Cruzeiro, joked about Atlético-MG’s achievements during a podcast interview with a popular presenter during the week. During the conversation, Sóbis not only made a light-hearted joke, but also recalled a similar incident in 2018, when he provoked Atlético-MG after Cruzeiro won the Mineiro Championship against their rivals.
“We were champions [de Minas Gerais]. At the end of the game, they asked me: ‘Sobis, what now?” Sobis said, “And I said: ‘The difference between us and them is that they celebrate a game, and we celebrate titles. That’s why the back of Cruzeiro’s bus is full of trophies, and theirs has nothing. I didn’t provoke, I just responded.”
“I’ve never been one for controversy, but some guys play with the wrong people. That still has repercussions today. But what can you say when I have more titles than their team? They’ve improved a bit, of course, but I’ve played 17 years of soccer. They’ve been around for a hundred and a few years and I still have more titles than them. The only thing I don’t have is more state championships, because that’s obvious; I can’t have them,” he concluded.
During his two spells with Cruzeiro (2016 to 2018 and 2020 to 2021), Sóbis scored 37 goals in 177 matches. He also won two Copa do Brasil titles (2017 and 2018) and one Campeonato Mineiro title (2018). At the end of the 2021 Campeonato Brasileiro, after the goalless draw between Cruzeiro and Náutico in the 38th round of the Série B, the striker hung up his boots in front of 60,700 fans at the Mineirão in Belo Horizonte.
