Argentina-Ecuador – 1:0
The South American nations’ journey towards the 2026 World Cup in North America began with the first World Cup qualifying match. Argentina, the reigning World Cup champions, beat Ecuador 1-0 thanks to an incredible free kick from maestro Lionel Messi at the end of the game. Lionel Scaloni’s men will defend their crown in the United States and Mexico in the 2026 edition of soccer’s biggest prize.
Colombia – Venezuela – 1:0
South American giants Colombia had no trouble claiming a crucial opening win against Venezuela, thanks to a second-half goal from Werder Bremen striker Rafael Borré.
In the 24th minute, Colombian Luis Diaz scored a goal that was disallowed for offside. In the 38th minute, Lerma was awarded a penalty, but the referee, after watching the video replay of the episode, did not register a foul on the defender. Veteran defender Yerry Mina was in top form, as was Crystal Palace star Jefferson Lerma. Liverpool winger Luis Diaz had a great game for his country, while Juan Cuadrado, who had a fantastic game for new team Inter at the weekend, had to be withdrawn at the end of the first half before Borré’s goal sealed the Colombians’ victory.
Paraguay х Peru – 0:0
Meanwhile, Peru and Paraguay played out a hard-fought draw, with Major League Soccer side Orlando’s number one standing out. The goalkeeper made six excellent saves and Peru came away with a point. In the 45th minute, Advincula received his second yellow card and the Peruvians had to play the second half in a minority. Neither team threatened the opponent’s net much, but each missed a great chance. However, Paraguay took more of the attacking initiative, hitting the opposing goal with 19 shots, but didn’t have many meaningful opportunities. In the 45+1 minute, Diego Gomez hit the crossbar of the Peruvian goal from a free-kick and in the 90+4 minute, Carlos Gonzalez hit the crossbar of the visitors’ goal.
