Atlanta Hawks player Trae Young was voted the NBA’s “most overrated” player by a group of 54 anonymous league players in a poll conducted by Sam Amick and Josh Robbins of The Athletic. Young received 14.8% of the votes with a total of eight votes, while no other player received more than four.
Despite being a two-time All-Star and an All-NBA pick last year, Young’s defensive limitations have restricted his potential. The 24-year-old is considered one of the worst defenders in the league.
However, their difficulties in the last two post-seasons have not been overcome.
Young hit 5 of 18 shots in Game 1 of the Hawks’ first-round series against the Boston Celtics, with just one 3-point basket in five attempts. He hit just eight of his 49 attempts from beyond the arc in his previous seven post-season games, the fewest in a seven-game period in the history of the playoffs.
While Young averaged 26.2 points and 10.2 assists per game, his career high, in 2022-23, his NBA contemporaries believe the statistics don’t show the full picture. He received the most votes in the “most overrated player” category, which implies that his potential has been overestimated.
Young began his college basketball career with the Oklahoma Sooners, where he tied the record for assists in an NCAA Section I game with 22 in 2017.
He was picked fifth by the Dallas Mavericks in the 2018 NBA Draft.
He was sent to the 2019 NBA All-Rookie 1st Team, along with Doncic, and played in two NBA All-Star games.
The second-place Boston Celtics will play the Atlanta Hawks in the first round of the playoffs, with the Celtics hoping to advance to the Eastern Conference semifinals. It remains to be seen whether Trae Young can overcome the image of being the most overrated player in the league and help lead the Hawks to success.
