After a goalless draw against Getafe in Madrid on Sunday afternoon, Barcelona’s lead at the top of La Liga dropped to 11 points, with the team having failed to win or score in their last three consecutive matches. Meanwhile, on Saturday, Real Madrid secured a 2-0 win over Cádiz, with Nacho and Marco Asensio scoring in the fourth minute. The win helped Real Madrid climb to 62 points, keeping their chances of winning the title alive, albeit slim. They are currently second in the league standings.
Barça draw with Getafe
Table leaders Barcelona were left frustrated after being forced to settle for a draw against Getafe. Despite dominating possession, Barcelona failed to convert their chances into goals.
Barcelona failed to take their chances in the first half and were denied a goal at the back post when Raphinha and Alejandro Balde missed their opportunities. With Pedri and Ousmane Dembele out through injury, it was difficult for the team to create chances, and even LaLiga’s top scorer, Robert Lewandowski, had his header saved by David Soria.
Getafe almost stole the game on a counter-attack, but Borja Mayoral’s shot narrowly missed the target. Barcelona will face Atlético de Madrid on Sunday at home, while Getafe, who will face Mallorca, are currently in 15th place, on the brink of the relegation zone.
Real Madrid’s dominant win in Cádiz
Real Madrid had a dominant display, with over 70% of the possession and creating numerous chances, with three shots hitting the post and an impressive display from goalkeeper David Gil. However, they failed to convert until the 72nd minute, when defender Nacho curled a fine long-range shot into the bottom left corner after receiving a pass from Aurelien Tchouameni.
Just four minutes later, Asensio increased the lead with a shot from the edge of the box that also hit the bottom left corner.
Real Madrid obviously have their Champions League quarter-final against Chelsea to look forward to. They lead 2-0 on aggregate, but don’t want to take things for granted.
Real Sociedad suffered a blow in their quest for the Champions League as the relegation battle heats up.
In the other matches, Real Sociedad suffered a 2-0 defeat to Athletic Club to move three points clear of Real Betis, who beat Espanyol 3-1 in the battle for fourth place. Meanwhile, Atlético Madrid got back to winning ways with a 2-1 victory over Almeria and are now in third place.
On the other hand, all the teams in the bottom five failed to pick up points, with last-placed Elche beaten 2-0 by Girona and 18th-placed Valencia beaten 2-0 by Sevilla, making the relegation battle even more interesting.
In the mid-table battle, Rayo Vallecano beat Osasuna 2-0, while Villareal suffered a 2-1 defeat to Real Valladolid. At the end of the 29th matchday, Celta de Vigo take on Mallorca on Monday night.
