Joel Embiid of the Philadelphia 76ers left no stone unturned after the team’s 96-84 victory over the Brooklyn Nets in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference playoff series.
Embiid’s initial target was Jaren Jackson Jr., who was named NBA Defensive Player of the Year ahead of Monday’s playoff games.
Despite not playing, Embiid took a swipe at the Memphis point guard, hinting at favoritism in favor of Jackson Jr. Although the hypothesis has been refuted, Embiid’s words can still irritate Jackson Jr.’s fans.
Embiid, however, didn’t stop there. He also mocked Raptors coach Nick Nurse and expressed his disappointment with Brooklyn’s attempt to pick up more fouls after Game 1. This season, Nurse’s Raptors grumbled about the refereeing.
Embiid’s comments could irritate Nurse and the Raptors, who are going through a difficult phase in their relationship. But the power forward was in rare form on Monday, scoring 20 points, a game-high 19 rebounds, seven assists, a steal and three blocks to help the 76ers take a 2-0 lead in the series.
The Sixers play the Nets again on Thursday and, if they manage to win, Embiid could have more punches waiting for unwary targets. No one is immune to the stray “Troel Embiid”.
Embiid’s post-game statements sparked controversy in the NBA, with many doubting his sportsmanship. Some labeled his conduct unprofessional, while others supported his right to freedom of expression. However, Embiid is a force to be reckoned with on and off the court.
All eyes will be on Embiid as the 76ers seek a dominant 3-0 lead against the Nets.
Embiid’s brilliance on the court is undeniable, despite the controversy surrounding his statements. This season, he has been a powerful force for the 76ers, averaging 28.5 points, 10.6 rebounds and 1.4 blocks per game. He is a strong contender for the MVP award this season and helped the 76ers to the top of the Eastern Conference rankings.
