Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez has given a positive update following his season-ending injury, having limped off in the first leg of the UEFA Europa League quarter-final.
The Argentine defender suffered a fractured metatarsal in his foot during United’s 2-2 draw with Sevilla at Old Trafford last week. Martinez revealed that he has undergone successful surgery and is already focused on recovery.
The former Ajax defender made 45 appearances for United this season, but suffered a strange injury against Sevilla and had to be taken off the pitch. United later confirmed that Martinez would miss the remainder of the campaign, with the club still competing for two trophies, the FA Cup and the Europa League title, as well as finishing in the top four in the Premier League. Earlier this season, they won the Carabao Cup, which was Erik Ten Hag’s first trophy as Manchester United manager.
The World Cup winner who starred for Argentina at Qatar 2022 shared a photo of himself in the hospital bed after surgery, revealing that he is already looking forward to a quick return to the pitch.
“Everything went very well, thank God! Thank you very much for all your messages. Now focusing on recovery“, Martinez wrote in his post.
The 25-year-old wasn’t the only player to leave the field injured against Sevilla, as fellow defender Raphael Varane was also replaced at half-time by Erik Ten Hag. The second leg of the quarter-final will be played at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan in Seville later this week.
With both starting defenders unavailable, Ten Hag named Victor Lindelof and Harry Maguire in his match on Sunday as United recorded a comfortable 2-0 win over Nottingham Forest in the Premier League.
Maguire had already scored a bizarre own goal in the first leg of the Europa League qualifier, but with few options available to Ten Hag, he is likely to start once again.
