The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) has planned special tributes to legendary footballer Pelé, who will be remembered before the opening round of this season’s Serie A and B championships. The federation is due to hold a series of tributes starting this Friday, following the death of the Brazilian icon in December 2022.
The top two divisions of Brazilian soccer kick off this weekend with Guarani set to host Avaí at Brinco de Ouro in the first game of the Serie B. After that, seven Serie A matches will be played on Saturday. The first two games will kick off at 4pm, with Palmeiras taking on Cuiabá in São Paulo, while in the simultaneous game in Belo Horizonte, Fluminense will face América-MG.
As part of the tributes to Pelé, the CBF has prepared a personalized captain’s armband and raffled coins that will pay homage to the King of Football. According to protocol, all the captains of the Serie A and Serie B championships will be wearing armbands in tribute to one of the greatest players of all time in world soccer.
Before the start of the matches, the organizers will make announcements and ask the fans to applaud for one minute in remembrance of Pelé, while all the players will be obliged to stand in the center circle as part of the tributes.
The CBF will also be printing images of the three-time FIFA World Cup winner on the advertising posters for the first round.
President of the Brazilian federation, Ednaldo Rodrigues had the idea of paying a special tribute to Pelé, the King of Football.
“Pelé is the greatest player of all time and will always be revered by the CBF. The King of Football’s legacy will live on“, said Rodrigues.
Pelé, the greatest ever to play the beautiful game, was born in October 1940. He scored 77 goals in 92 games for Brazil, helping them win three World Cup titles. The legendary figure breathed his last in São Paulo, two days before the New Year.
