For some time now, the Indianapolis Colts have been linked to Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson, but recent statements from the Colts’ coaching staff indicate that their interest in him may be waning. Colts coach Shane Steichen said the team’s current focus is on the upcoming NFL draft, rather than pursuing Jackson as a free agent.
Although Colts general manager Chris Ballard admitted last month that the organization was considering acquiring Jackson, recent words and actions by the team suggest that their interest in him may be waning. Colts owner Jim Irsay said that if the Ravens don’t match the Colts’ offer sheet, he won’t be ready to trade the two first-round picks needed to get Jackson.
However, the Colts are now examining the best quarterbacks available in the 2017 draft. They worked with Ohio State’s C.J. Stroud, Alabama’s Bryce Young, Florida’s Anthony Richardson and Kentucky’s Will Levis. The Colts are in a good position to select one of the best defenders available with the fourth overall pick.
It remains to be seen whether the Colts will eventually pursue Jackson or choose a new quarterback. However, it seems that the team is carefully evaluating its alternatives and taking into account all the elements involved in making such an important decision.
If the Colts decide to sign Jackson, they will almost certainly face strong competition from other clubs interested in his services. Jackson is widely regarded as one of the best qb’s in the league, and his unique skill set would be an asset to any club.
Ultimately, the Colts will need to carefully weigh their alternatives and make the decision that is best for the franchise. Whether they pursue Jackson or choose a quarterback, the Colts must be analytical and methodical in their approach if they hope to develop a winning team in the coming years.
