The GuaynaboMets, a professional basketball team in Puerto Rico’s Baloncesto Superior Nacional league, announced the signing of former NBA All-Star DeMarcusCousins on Tuesday. Cousins, a free agent, opted to take his skills to Puerto Rico, a region known for its love of basketball, according to the organization. The details of the contract have not yet been revealed.
DeMarcusCousins, the fifth overall pick in the 2010 NBA draft, was most recently with the Denver Nuggets and the Milwaukee Bucks in the 2021-22 season. He also played with the Sacramento Kings, New Orleans Pelicans, Golden State Warriors, Los Angeles Lakers, Houston Rockets and Los Angeles Clippers, among others. Cousins averaged 19.6 points and 10.2 rebounds per game throughout his NBA career.
He will join the list of top-level athletes who have played in Puerto Rico’s Baloncesto Superior Nacional league, which has attracted several former NBA players in recent years. Cousins, an All-American at the University of Kentucky, also won two gold medals with the US national basketball team.
The Baloncesto Superior Nacional league, created in 1938, is Puerto Rico’s main professional basketball league, with seven clubs in the 2020-21 season. The league champion competes in the Caribbean Series. For the first time since its creation, the league ceased operations in 2007, but resumed operations the following year after a reform and changed its name to the Puerto Rico Basketball League (PRBL).
Cousins’ choice to play for the GuaynaboMets could offer him an opportunity to demonstrate his skills to NBA clubs and perhaps earn a contract for next season. Injuries have affected the 32-year-old forward in recent years, limiting his playing time and chances. His talent and experience in the NBA, on the other hand, could make him a great asset for the Mets, as well as an exciting addition to the Puerto Rican league. Basketball fans in Puerto Rico will surely be looking forward to watching Cousins play this season.
