Since Wrexham was bought by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, the club that competes in the fifth tier of English soccer has earned the new nickname ‘Hollywood FC’. On Monday, they played a thrilling game that would make a good script for a Hollywood movie, as Ben Foster saved a last-gasp penalty to help Wrexham move closer to promotion from the National League after beating Notts County 3-2.
Both Reynolds and McElhenney were present for the National Football League clash between the top two sides, with the Welsh club coming out victorious. It was a rollercoaster of emotions as Wrexham clinched top spot to seal promotion to the fourth tier.
It was the visitors who took the lead, with John Bostock scoring a fine goal just before half-time. The midfielder curled a perfect free-kick over the Wrexham wall into the top corner to open the scoring. The home side, however, didn’t waste much time as they levelled the game thanks to the heroics of their top scorer Paul Mullin, who finished a teasing cross from James Jones into the net minutes after the break.
Wrexham began to push their players forward as they took the lead thanks to Jacob Mendy’s goal. Notts County showed great resilience, however, when they came back to equalise, as skipper Kyle Cameron was in the right place at the right time for a well-taken header.
Wrexham got a lot of help from the visitors’ defensive lapses. Elliott Lee scored the third goal for the hosts, but there was more drama when Wrexham conceded a penalty. Cedwyn Scott had the chance to earn his side a point in injury time, but it was saved by Ben Foster, to help take all three points for Reynolds’ side.
Although the goalkeeper’s merit is inestimable, Mullin became the MVP of the match – not only did he score the goal, which was his 44th of the season, but he also provided two assists.
