Englishman Andy Murray, who is currently in the second round of his tennis career, is grateful to be able to play the sport again. The 35-year-old had already considered retirement due to a persistent hip injury in 2019.
After undergoing hip surgery, the Scottish tennis player is back in action and has climbed into the top 60 of the ATP rankings, a significant improvement on his previous ranking outside the top 800.
During a recent interview with Tennis Majors, the former world No. 1 discussed his surgery and expressed his hope that his story would inspire other tennis players to never give up on their dreams.
As a three-time Grand Slam champion, he acknowledged his good fortune in receiving the best medical care available in this age of scientific advancement and expressed his desire to continue playing for many more years.
“That’s not something I really thought about. But I’d be happy if it could inspire other players, especially amateur tennis players, to never give up and believe that anything is possible. I think I’m very lucky to have had my surgery when I did, with a great team around me“, said Andy Murray.
Andy Murray shares ideas for players struggling with injuries
Andy Murray gave advice to players who are on a similar path to his, trying to return to the sport after being told to retire. He suggests that they work hard and surround themselves with good people.
“It was an incredibly difficult time for me,” said Murray. “I tried to show that in my documentary. I don’t think you can underestimate how difficult the low points are, but you have to stick to the plan, work hard and surround yourself with good people who are on the journey with you.”
Andy Murray starts his Monte-Carlo Master Open campaign against Alex de Minaur
Andy Murray, who recently exited the Miami Open in the first round, will next take part in the 2023 Monte-Carlo Masters. He is scheduled to play 14th seed Alex de Minaur in his opening match. Initially, the 35-year-old was considering not starting his clay season in Monte-Carlo; however, Denis Shapovalov’s withdrawal allowed him to enter the main draw of the Masters 1000 event, making his first appearance at the tournament since 2017.
So far, 2023 has been an exceptional year for Murray. He reached the third round of the Australian Open and the final of the Qatar Open, securing significant wins over the likes of Alexander Zverev, Lorenzo Sonego and Matteo Berrettini.
