In that match, Brazilian Richarlison scored his first goal of the new season. This happened in the 56th minute, with the score at 0-1, when Fulham defender Tete had to leave the field briefly to replace a lost boot. The midfielder headed home Perisic’s cross. In fact, it was only his fourth goal for Tottenham since his £60 million transfer last summer.
The goal cancelled out Mickey van de Ven’s own goal in the 19th minute. Although there are rumors that Davinson Sanchez is planning to leave the club, Postecoglou prefers to play him in defense instead of Eric Dier. But it’s clear that Sanchez isn’t in his best form, as he was at fault for Fulham’s goal. He couldn’t prevent Cairney from crossing into the area and, after a rebound from Van de Ven, the ball ended up in the net.
Compared to the previous match, Tottenham introduced nine new players to the starting line-up. Fulham opted to use most of their key defenders and the hosts’ coach Marco Silva was absent due to suspension.
It’s worth noting that two Brazilians have played for Spurs. Defender Emerson was limited in the attacking phase and made no saves when the goal was scored. At the same time, Richarlison played very little part in the game and, apart from the goal, only one shot was saved by Rodak.
Fulham started with Rodrigo Muniz. The Brazilian had three chances to score. For example, before half-time, he headed the ball, but Forster saved the goal. The striker has been active, but still needs a lot of work to become a first-team player. He was replaced in the 83rd minute. Brazilian Andreas Pereira came on in the 77th minute and scored one of the penalties after the game.
Five players scored in the penalty shoot-out for Fulham: Andreas Pereira, Raul Jimenez, Wilson, João Palinha and Tete. The opponent converted the first, second and fourth shots. The decisive factor was Sanchez’s miss (his 3rd in the series) – a weak shot and Rodak’s save.
Tottenham fans were excited by the positive atmosphere Postecoglou brought after a challenging start to 2023. However, during the match, some of the away fans at Craven Cottage directed their frustration at chairman Daniel Levy, calling for him to leave the club. For the first time since 2005, Tottenham have been eliminated at such an early stage of the tournament (in the second round).
