Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag praised Bruno Fernandes, praising the captain’s role in orchestrating an impressive come-from-behind 3-2 victory over Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford.
3-2 against Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford
. Before the game, Ten Hag had publicly supported Fernandes’ leadership qualities, countering criticism from some analysts, such as Micah Richards, who questioned whether the 28-year-old’s emotional temperament could affect his captaincy.
Ten Hag’s confidence in Fernandes was confirmed when the Portuguese midfielder played a key role in United’s dramatic comeback from a two-goal deficit in the first four minutes of the game. Showing extraordinary ingenuity and talent, Fernandes not only set up Casemiro’s equalizer, but also coolly slotted home the game’s decisive penalty after a foul by Danilo on Marcus Rashford.
“In every facet of the game, he was exceptional. He kept his composure, controlled his emotions well and was exceptional in the attacking phase. His contribution was decisive for the game and I couldn’t be more pleased” said Ten Hag.
The win was all the more important because it was the first time in the Premier League era that Manchester United had recovered from a two-goal deficit so early in a match. While questions can be raised about United’s defensive lapses that led to the early goals, Nottingham Forest can also be criticized for failing to hold on to their lead.
As for the controversial penalty awarded to the home side, Ten Hag preferred to focus his post-match comments on the team’s grit and determination.
He added: “The team showed immense spirit and vigor. This shows our capacity for recovery. Overcoming such a difficult start is no small feat, and the team deserves all the praise.“
