Prominent basketball journalists entitled to vote for the All-NBA teams received an unexpected gift from none other than Boston Celtics star Jaylen Brown. Brown, in a polite act, wrote thank-you notes to these voters, acknowledging his difficult situation. He emphasized the importance of his decisions in shaping the players’ financial destiny.
Brown’s appointment to the All-NBA second team was crucial, as it made him eligible for a big supermax deal with the Celtics. This gigantic contract, possibly worth $303.7 million, is a testament to his extraordinary success on the court.
Notably, Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown’s teammate, had a similar situation before signing his latest contract with the Celtics. His omission from the All-NBA team in the 2020-21 season reduced his eligibility for the supermax, resulting in a less costly deal. Tatum’s open dissatisfaction with his situation became clear during his interview on JJ Redick’s podcast, “The Old Man and The Three”.
However, Jayson Tatum’s fortunes could change in the coming discussions. The changes to the league’s collective bargaining agreement make the process more equal. The new rules allow the formation of All-NBA teams without a position, recognizing the 15 best players in the league without taking conventional roles into account. In addition, a minimum of 65 games played was imposed for eligibility for the regular season award, maintaining a high standard.
Jaylen Brown, who was picked third by the Celtics in the 2016 NBA draft, has definitely emerged as an important factor. With two NBA All-Star selections under his belt, he helped lead the Celtics to the NBA Finals in 2022.
Brown showed his skills in the 2022-23 season, averaging 26.6 points, 6.9 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game. His shooting accuracy was 49.1% from the field, with a performance of 33.5% from beyond the arc.
Brown’s ability to make perimeter jumpers and generate opportunities off the dribble has earned him praise for his flexibility as a scorer. His overall skills include rebounding and defense, cementing his place as one of the NBA’s most promising young players.
Brown reaffirmed his devotion to the Celtics this year by signing a five-year, US$304 million supermax contract. With determination, he sees himself as a cornerstone in Boston’s quest for championship glory.
