After Flamengo’s victory over Gremio, coach Jorge Sampaoli spoke about his favoritism in the upcoming Copa do Brasil final against São Paulo. As reigning champions,
Flamengo secured their place with a 1-0 win over Grêmio at the Maracanã
on Wednesday, after winning 2-0 in the first leg in Porto Alegre.
However, Sampaoli quickly dismissed any claims of preferential treatment and instead expressed his anticipation for the intense challenges that await them against São Paulo.
On the subject, Sampaoli said: “Facing Dorival (Júnior), who has already won a title with Flamengo, brings an extra layer of competition. Dorival leads a highly competitive team. I looked at aspects of the recent game against Corinthians, and São Paulo undoubtedly showed their superiority. With two formidable matches in store, we’re in for a thrilling final.“
Last year, Flamengo won the Copa do Brasil under Dorival Júnior. This time, the experienced coach, who was previously in charge of Flamengo, wants to lead São Paulo to their first win in the prestigious tournament.
In order to secure their place in the final, São Paulo cleverly overturned Corinthians’ advantage and affirmed their presence in the title race. After a 2-1 defeat in the first leg at the Arena Neo Química, São Paulo showed their resilience with a resounding 2-0 win in Morumbi.
São Paulo showed their resilience with a resounding 2-0 win at Morumbi
effectively consolidating their qualification.
Flamengo will be pleased with the results, especially after having had to deal with a series of problems off the pitch, such as a huge controversy that arose after former coach Pablo Fernandez got into a fight with striker Pedro. The issue seems to have been resolved, and Sampaoli hopes for success on the pitch from now on.
As plans unfold, the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) originally designated September 17 and 24 as the dates for the Copa do Brasil finals. A final confirmation should be announced in the coming weeks.
