The crucial transaction that brought Jimmy Butler to the Miami Heat in 2019 was praised as a masterstroke that revitalized the team’s fortunes. His presence alone reinvigorated the Heat’s competitive spirit, taking them to two NBA finals in four years.
Butler quickly achieved fan favorite status in South Florida due to his tremendous competitive drive and excellent leadership skills. In this sunny paradise, he set his sights on the indescribable summit of an NBA title. Although it came dangerously close in 2020 and 2023, the title of champion has yet to be won.
However, the statement by former Boston Celtics executive Danny Ainge shed light on another world. Ainge said on the “Knuckleheads” podcast, hosted by Quentin Richardson and Darius Miles, that he explored a deal to bring Butler to the Celtics during his tenure.
Ainge’s observations are reflective: “Some of the best deals I’ve ever made were the ones I couldn’t make.” When I was in Boston, I tried to sign Jimmy Butler from Chicago, but they demanded a high price. As a result, we didn’t take part. And it was Jaylen [Brown] and Jayson [Tatum] who were chosen. These two choices from the draw“.
The repercussions of an unknown path are obvious. In retrospect, both Heat fans and Butler are undoubtedly happy with the way things turned out, allowing the marriage of skills between Butler and the Heat to flourish. On the other hand, the Celtics’ choice to develop players like Brown and Tatum paved the way for their own development and future championship hopes.
