According to Kyle Neubeck of the Philly Voice, the Los Angeles Clippers are hesitant to include emerging star Terance Mann as part of a deal to acquire the Philadelphia 76ers’ brilliant point guard in the ongoing James Harden trade story. The Clippers’ eagerness to sign Harden caused a stalemate in the discussions, with both sides seeking power.
The Sixers are in an advantageous position, as they are not obliged to trade Harden if they don’t receive a good offer. Daryl Morey, president of basketball operations, had already shown patience during a previous prolonged standoff involving Ben Simmons, which resulted in a trade for Harden. For various reasons, both the Clippers and Harden expect the Sixers to concede this time.
On the one hand, allowing the situation to persist throughout the season could create chaos among the squad, perhaps upsetting star player Joel Embiid and jeopardizing the team’s chances of winning a championship during his prime years. The Sixers are determined not to waste an entire season with Embiid in top form.
Harden’s contract situation complicates things even more. He becomes a free agent after the 2023-24 season, which encourages the Clippers to sign him now rather than risk losing him for free next summer.
The Sixers, on the other hand, could argue that the expiration of Tobias Harris and Harden’s contracts would give them significant room to pursue free agents like LeBron James, Anthony Davis, Kawhi Leonard, Paul George, Pascal Siakam, Jrue Holiday and OG Anunoby.
The Sixers’ choice is complicated by the uncertainty of obtaining any of these talents, as well as the risk of alienating Embiid. They may be counting on another great point guard, Damien Lillard, to change their minds about possible trade destinations. Lillard is currently interested in joining the Miami Heat, comparable to Harden’s burning desire to join the Clippers.
If Lillard starts considering alternative options, the Sixers could take the opportunity to go after him. In this situation, Harden could be a great asset for the Portland Trail Blazers, who may want more pieces in a possible trade. Although the wait for this prospect includes dangers, it gives Morey and the Sixers a potentially huge reward.
As long as the Clippers refuse to include Terance Mann in the negotiations, the Sixers will have no motivation to take part in the talks. However, the team may reach a point where it is prepared to give in, but that option seems remote for the time being.
