Major League Soccer side Inter Miami have signed Spanish defensive stalwart Jordi Alba, while David Beckham’s side are embarking on a big wave in the transfer market, having already secured the signing of the legendary Lionel Messi. Alba will be the third former Barcelona player to join the MLS side, after midfield maestro Sergio Busquets arrived after a long spell with the Blaugrana. The team is looking to strengthen its squad with a number of elite players, despite being in last place in the Eastern Conference.
Inter Miami owner Jorge Mas spoke about Alba during his presentation, calling the Spaniard a “legend of the sport”. But he also outlined his team’s future transfer plans, having signed deals for Racing Santander defender Tomas Aviles and Newells Old Boys striker Bryan Aguirre. He also gave his opinion on the possibility of bringing in Luis Suárez. Initially, there were reports that Suárez was considering a move to the MLS, but Mas clarified that a deal would only be possible if the Uruguayan terminated his contract with Grêmio.
“Luis Suárez is a Gremio player. He has a contract. We understand the close relationship he has with Lionel, Busquets and Alba. They played together at Barcelona. There has been a lot of talk about Luis Suárez coming to Inter Miami. We haven’t had any direct talks with Gremio or Suárez. I don’t know how Luis Suárez can leave Gremio. But if he leaves, we’re free to talk to Luis and bring him to Inter Miami. This possibility exists“.
Alba spent more than a decade with the Catalan side, making 459 appearances in total. He was part of Barcelona’s UEFA Champions League-winning team in 2015. The former Valencia player also made 93 appearances for La Roja, winning the European Championship in 2012.
