Chelsea have completed the signing of Brazilian wonderkid Angelo Gabriel from Santos for a fee of around £13 million. The winger was linked with several clubs, but Chelsea acted quickly to secure the 18-year-old’s services.
For those who don’t know, Angelo made his debut in the Brazilian top flight in October 2020, when he was just 15 years old. Since then, he has scored five goals in 129 games for Santos, which has a long and illustrious history of producing some of the best players in South America.
The youngster already has many records to his name, he was the youngest to score in the Copa Libertadores when he scored at the age of 16 in 2021. This kind of dazzling performance made Angelo one of the brightest young prospects, and Chelsea quickly signed the teenager.
The left winger has already represented Brazil at youth level, including U-15, U-17 and U-20, but has yet to be called up to the senior team for the first time.
“Chelsea have completed the signing of Brazilian full-back Angelo Gabriel from Santos,” says the Premier League giants’ statement.
“Born in Brasilia, the 18-year-old arrives at Stamford Bridge with a wealth of experience in senior soccer; he made 129 appearances for Santos’ first team in all competitions. Welcome to Chelsea, Angelo!“, added the team.
According to reports, Barcelona were also interested in signing Angelo, but ended up dropping out of the race. The youngster is expected to join the rest of his teammates in the United States, as they are set to begin their pre-season tour later this week.
It’s been an incredibly busy summer so far for Stamford Bridge, who have sold many first team players to reduce a bloated squad following new owner Todd Boehly’s record spending spree.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side also made some signings, two of them, to be precise, before Angelo, as Christopher Nkunku arrived from RB Leipzig for 52 million pounds and Nicolas Jackson from Villarreal. Chelsea haven’t finished the transfer market yet and are still chasing Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo.che
