Despite the remarkable signing of Kyrie Irving on a three-year contract this offseason, the Dallas Mavericks now expect a big change before the end of the season.
According to renowned NBA expert Marc Stein, Dallas is interested in acquiring Atlanta Hawks forward Clint Capela. The Mavericks had already shown interest in acquiring the player. According to Stein, they tried to organize a trade for him at the time of the NBA draft. However, the Hawks asked for Josh Green and the 10th overall pick, which Dallas used to choose Cason Wallace. They ended up trading Wallace for Dereck Lively II, the 12th overall pick.
Fans have been concerned about the Mavericks’ center position after the combination of Christian Wood and Dwight Powell failed to earn a playoff spot with Irving and Luka Doncic. To solve this problem, Dallas spent the summer reinforcing its front court with the signing of Richaun Holmes and Grant Williams. Williams joined the Mavericks as part of a four-year, $54 million contract extension.
Although Wood’s numbers are great, his play has been uneven compared to his previous seasons with the Detroit Pistons and Houston Rockets. Notably, Wood is now a free agent and could be involved in a sign-and-trade deal. The Mavericks, on the other hand, are hesitant due to budget constraints.
The Mavericks, according to Stein, are already approaching the NBA’s luxury tax threshold, and are only $9 million away from it. To take part in a deal of this kind, they would need to value highly any player they acquired in exchange for Wood.
When it comes to pursuing Capela, the Mavericks front office seems to be acting cautiously. Only time will tell whether your patient approach will result in the desired transaction.
As the NBA summer draws to a close, the Dallas Mavericks are looking to sign Clint Capela from the Atlanta Hawks. The Mavericks are motivated to make a substantial change at the power forward position, which has been a source of concern, and with the desire to improve their team for the post-season.
