Despite being sidelined for the second game in a row, Kai-Sotto, the imposing 6’10” forward, keeps a good attitude. Orlando-Magic were beaten 108-85 by the Indiana-Pacers at the Thomas & Mack Centre in Las Vegas, and Sotto didn’t take part in the game. This happened after he was absent from the team’s last defeat, 89-78, against the Detroit-Pistons. Despite this, Sotto accepts the situation with grace, saying: “So far, it’s been very good,” in an interview broadcast by the NBA on Facebook. He also mentions how much he enjoys the preparation procedure and the camaraderie between his teammates and coaches.
Unfortunately, earning playing time has been difficult for Sotto. With 21 players on the Magic’s roster for Summer League, coach Dylan-Murphy has mainly used rookies and second-year players, with around 11 in action so far. Even so, Sotto intends to take advantage of the experience and demonstrate his skill whenever the occasion arises. “I’m just trying to show the coaches that I’m a good teammate, that I’m a good player,” he says. Sotto’s optimistic nature has made him a useful asset, eager to participate whenever his name is called.
Sotto’s lack of playing time infuriated basketball fans in the Philippines, with some shouting his name during the live television broadcast. Recognizing the enormous responsibility he carries as the first local Filipino to play in the NBA, Sotto is aware of his actions and their influence in representing his nation. He is grateful for the great support he has received from his fellow Filipinos and recognizes the benefits of representing his country on a daily basis.
During the Summer League, Sotto will have two more chances to take to the court. The Orlando Magic, who are 0-2 this season, will play the New York Knicks and the Portland Trail-Blazers. Kai Sotto is determined to do his best and prepare for when the coach calls his name. The presence of fervent Filipino fans at matches reminds him of the belief and trust placed in him, encouraging him to give his all and make his nation proud.
