Goalkeeper Tiago Volpi had some remarkable performances during his time at São Paulo, a club in Brazil’s top division. At 32, the Santa Catarina native seems to have developed a penchant for scoring goals, just like the renowned Rogério Ceni.
On July 8 (Saturday), Volpi scored his fifth goal for Toluca in a 2-0 win over Cruz Azul in Liga MX. Notably, four of his five goals have come in the last eight games played by his Mexican team and all of them have come from penalty kicks.
Volpi’s goal against Cruz Azul came in the 36th minute and was the first goal of the match. Toluca’s second was scored by Juan Pablo Dominguez in stoppage time, during the penultimate stage of the game, after a well-organized move and an exchange of passes.
Volpi’s first goal for Toluca came in October last year, in the last minute of a thrilling 4-3 win over Santos Laguna. The other four goals were scored this year; one in the 2-1 win over Puebla, another in the 1-1 draw with Juárez and two more in the 3-0 draw with Necaxa.
With his recent goal against Cruz Azul, Volpi has contributed four goals in Toluca’s last eight league games.
After his last goal, strong comparisons are being made between him and former Brazilian star Rogério Ceni. However, despite Volpi’s growing interest in scoring goals, he still has a long way to go to match the legendary Rogério Ceni. Ceni, São Paulo’s iconic goalkeeper, holds the record of 131 goals, the most for a player in this position, and was also very skilled at free-kicks.
