Experienced playmaker Ashley Young has agreed a deal to join Everton and is due to undergo a medical on Tuesday following his departure from Aston Villa earlier this summer. After his contract expired at Villa Park, the 38-year-old striker entered negotiations with Luton Town, while clubs from Saudi Arabia have also expressed an interest. However, Young opted to continue his footballing journey with Everton.
Throughout his illustrious career, Young enjoyed considerable success, winning the Premier League and FA Cup titles with Manchester United, as well as the Serie A title with Inter Milan. His trophy cabinet also includes Europa League and League Cup triumphs with United. Young’s versatility, moving from winger to defender, allowed him to leave an indelible mark on the sport.
With 39 caps for England, including a memorable match in the 2018 World Cup semi-final against Croatia, Young brings invaluable international experience to Everton’s ranks. His depth of experience, having made over 700 appearances for club and country, will undoubtedly be to the Toffees’ advantage. Having narrowly escaped relegation in the last two seasons, Everton will benefit from the arrival of Young, who will provide leadership and direction to the team.
This signing is Everton’s first under the tutelage of Sean Dyche, who took over as manager in January. Dyche led the club to Premier League survival on the final day of the previous season, demonstrating his astute leadership skills. As Everton embark on a rigorous five-day training camp in the picturesque Swiss Alps, with a friendly against Stade Nyonnais, the addition of Ashley Young will strengthen the squad and contribute to their ambitious efforts next season.
Everton’s survival in the Premier League has depended precariously on small margins in the last two campaigns. Their fate was sealed only on the final matchday on both occasions, a scenario the Toffees are keen to avoid. Although the revival of their former glory remains a distant aspiration, astute signings have the potential to accelerate their resurgence and put them back in mid-table as soon as possible.
