Legendary Dutch goalkeeper Edwin Van der Sar is currently being treated in intensive care after the 52-year-old suffered a bleed on the brain. According to reports, Van der Sar was on vacation in Croatia when he suffered the illness and the Dutchman was subsequently taken to a hospital where he is being treated.
In their statement, Ajax revealed that the former Netherlands goalkeeper, who amassed 130 caps, is currently in ‘stable condition’.
The club released a statement wishing the veteran a speedy recovery.
“Everyone at Ajax wishes Edwin a speedy recovery. We’re thinking of you“, said the Eredivisie team’s statement.
The legendary figure retired from club soccer in 2011, ending an illustrious career with Ajax, Manchester United, Juventus and Fulham.
After his retirement, the Dutchman joined the Ajax board in 2012. In 2016, he was promoted to CEO of the club. However, at the beginning of May 2023, Edwin quit his job after the Eredivisie club finished third in the league, as well as their subsequent failure to qualify for the Champions League for the first time since 2009.
The legendary goalkeeper made 266 appearances for Manchester United and won four Premier League titles, two League Cups, three Community Shields, the Champions League in 2008 and also the FIFA Club World Cup.
Manchester United also issued a statement wishing Van der Sar a speedy recovery.
“Sending all our love and strength to you, Edwin,” wrote United.
Former teammate Rio Ferdinand also sent his best wishes to the Van der Sar family. Fulham expressed their solidarity with the legend, while the Professional Footballers’ Association also posted a tweet in support of Edwin.
After Van der Sar’s retirement, United bought David de Gea from Atlético Madrid – the Spaniard has been at the club ever since. However, after a decade, De Gea’s contract has expired and the Red Devils are on the lookout for Inter Milan’s André Onana.
So the Spaniard faces an uncertain future. Now it remains to be seen where he might end up next season.
