After Real Madrid continued their winning streak in the fourth round of La Liga, beating Getafe 2-1, attention turned to the frontrunners, with Barcelona and Atlético Madrid in action on Sunday night. Reigning champions Barça managed a narrow 2-1 victory over a lively Osasuna side.
And Atlético Madrid’s home game against Sevilla had to be canceled. The government weather agency has issued a red alert for Madrid due to storm DANA on the day of the match. The mayor’s office asked to avoid unnecessary trips, hoping that the amount of rainfall could reach 120 l/m². “The city is expecting a very difficult day and night. The record rainfall since 1972 is expected to be broken,” said the mayor of Madrid, José Luis Martínez-Almeida.
Elsewhere, Xavi’s men travel to El Sadar in Pamplona looking to keep pace with Madrid. Goals from Jules Kounde and Lewandowski helped the Catalan giants claim all three points, while Ezequiel Avila scored a consolation goal for the hosts.
Frenkie de Jong hit the post just a minute after the kick-off, while Lewandowski failed to hit the target from the rebound.
Ilkay Gundogan also missed a glorious chance when he failed to hit the target after some slack defending from the Osasuna players. Aimar Oroz had his shot saved by Marc Andre ter Stegen and the game remained 0-0, while there could have been three goals in half an hour.
On 45+2 minutes, Gundogan made up for his earlier mistake by crossing from a corner for Kunde – 0:1. In the 76th minute, Cimi Avila equalized with a fine shot from outside the area, giving the home fans a glimmer of hope.
But five minutes later, Lewandowski gave Barça a penalty when he was brought down in the box by Alejandro Catena. The Spaniard was initially shown a yellow card, which was changed to red after a VAR review. The Pole took the penalty himself – 1:2. After that, Brazilian Rafinha came on to replace him.
Girona – Las Palmas – 1:0
The Porto striker joined Girona on September 1 and, just two days later, brought victory to his new club. In the 88th minute, he scored after a pass from the Brazilian to Yann Couto. Four games into the new season, Girona have won their third league title (plus a draw) and established themselves among the top four teams.
