In a bid to boost their performance in the Campeonato Brasileiro, Vasco are on the verge of signing French soccer star Dimitri Payet, 36, who recently left Marseille. The club’s negotiations with the midfielder indicate a determined effort to improve their league position.
On Friday, August 11, news emerged confirming Vasco’s significant progress in discussions to finalize a deal with an important “number 10” player. Reliable sources have revealed that the player in question is none other than Dimitri Payet, a revelation first brought to light by ge.globo and later confirmed by Itatiaia.
Vasco’s board of directors see Payet as a transformative reinforcement, capable of catalyzing the team’s fortunes as they struggle to get out of the relegation zone in the Serie A of the Brazilian Championship. The club’s position at the bottom of the league had already affected negotiations with other high-profile players, preventing potential signings.
Payet, a revered figure at Marseille, has an illustrious career spanning seven seasons, amassing 243 appearances, 63 goals and 62 assists. Vasco believe that the player’s experience and skill set can significantly strengthen the midfield and reinvigorate the team’s attacking capabilities.
The transfer marks Vasco’s last effort to strengthen its squad before the transfer window closes, as the club had already focused on other areas, including the front line. Although the search for Robert Rojas, from River Plate-ARG, for a defensive role seemed promising at first, negotiations were halted due to disagreements over the renewal of his contract.
Since the deal with Rojas didn’t materialize, Vasco’s board and coaching staff are now focused on maximizing the potential of their current squad. Coach Ramón Díaz, who had expressed an interest in Rojas, is determined to use the available resources and devise effective strategies to take Vasco to a more favorable position in the league.
