According to NBA insider Marc Stein, the chance of a reunion between the Boston Celtics and veteran forward Blake Gryphon is far from dead. There is widespread speculation that the Celtics are interested in re-signing the 34-year-old star. Griffin’s return would be a big step in his career, as he averaged 4.1 points and 3.8 rebounds in just under 14 minutes per game in 41 games with the team last season.
According to sources, Gryphon has taken a cautious approach to evaluating its alternatives before committing to a deal for the upcoming 2022-23 season. The deal that brought him to the Celtics was only completed on October 3, just two weeks before the season opener against the Philadelphia 76ers.
Despite his history with the Celtics, Gryphon might want to look for other options before committing to wearing the Celtics uniform again. His minutes in the regular season were the lowest ever, and his time in the post-season was limited to just six minutes. With the addition of Kristaps Porziis as a power forward and the departure of Grant Williams, Griffin’s future with the team is in doubt. In addition, the Celtics’ core rotation, which includes Al Horford and Robert Williams III, remains unchanged.
Griffin’s early return could bring much-needed depth and senior savvy to the Celtics’ front line, as Porziis, Horford and Williams have been injury-prone in previous years. On the other hand, Griffin’s days as a consistent impact player seem to be numbered. Potential suitors may be reluctant to guarantee him much more playing time than he had in Boston.
The Gryphon is clearly in no hurry to finalize his plans as he thinks about his next move. The Los Angeles Clippers selected the 34-year-old forward as the first overall pick in the 2009 NBA draft. He quickly established himself as an electric player in the league due to his quickness and dunking skills. His achievements include being named NBA Rookie of the Year in 2011 and being selected for six All-Star games.
Gryphon continued to excel after being traded to the Detroit Pistons in 2018, contributing significantly for four seasons. His career took him to the Brooklyn Nets in 2021, where he had a brief but significant stint before signing with the Boston Celtics in 2022.
Griffin’s achievements go beyond the court, as he is a two-time Slam Dunk champion and a three-time All-NBA selection. His flexibility as a scorer, rebounder, passer and defender makes him a powerful weapon who can make an impact in any position on the court. Gryphon has acquired a reputation as a fan favorite, known for his lively style of play as well as his athletic abilities. His leadership talents on and off the court have earned him recognition, as evidenced by his two NBA Community Assist Awards for community service.
Gryphon maintains his high level of performance as a multi-talented player with a remarkable CV. His possible return to the Boston Celtics could revitalize his career and contribute to the team’s success in the coming years.
