In a highly anticipated preliminary bantamweight fight at UFC Nashville, the spotlight was on Kyler Phillips, who faced Brazilian Raoni Barcelos. Phillips was returning to the octagon, seeking redemption after a suspension due to a positive test for a banned substance. On the other hand, Barcelos was facing a challenging phase in his career, having only won once in his previous four fights. His most recent setback was against the still undefeated Umar Nurmagomedov.
The opening moments of the fight were electrifying. Phillips, known for his agility, wasted no time setting the pace. Nicknamed “The Matrix”, he quickly landed two impactful kicks to the calf. Barcelos, who didn’t want to be overshadowed, retaliated with a robust counter-offensive. Demonstrating his grappling acumen, the Brazilian deftly caught one of Phillips’ kicks, taking the fight to the mat. At the climax of the first round, Barcelos thwarted another high kick attempt from Phillips, leaving fans and experts in doubt as to who had the upper hand.
In the second round, Phillips showed off his wrestling skills with a perfectly executed takedown, trapping Barcelos. However, this advantageous position did not produce the results Phillips wanted. When both fighters were on their feet, Phillips’ agile footwork was evident, as he dodged Barcelos’ attempts to land decisive blows. Although Barcelos landed a spectacular blow, he was unable to maintain his dominance. In the final moments of the round, Phillips launched a series of precise right punches.
The tension was palpable at the start of the third and final round. The consensus was that Phillips had a slight advantage in points, which forced Barcelos to adopt a more aggressive approach in the final minutes. Phillips, however, remained agile, dodging Barcelos’ powerful blows with ease. Although Barcelos managed to knock Phillips down momentarily, the latter’s resilience got him up quickly. In a last-ditch effort, Barcelos intensified his attack, hitting several right hands. However, this was not enough to change the trajectory of the struggle.
In the end, the judges’ scorecards reflected Phillips’ consistent performance throughout the fight. Kyler Phillips was victorious over Raoni Barcelos by unanimous decision, 30-27, 29-28 and 29-28. This fight not only marked Phillips’ triumphant return, but also showed the determination and skill of both fighters.
