Reliable information coming out of Italy suggests that Premier League giants Manchester United have concluded a deal to bring in striker Rasmus Hojlund from Atalanta FC in a deal worth 65 million euros. The Danish striker had long been rumored to be in United manager Erik Ten Hag’s plans, and now that the deal has gone through, Manchester United have managed to strengthen the number nine position.
The team had been without a prominent and recognized centre-forward since the start of the 2022/23 season, when legendary Portuguese striker Cristiano Ronaldo was relegated to the bench by the Dutch coach. Ronaldo then terminated his contract at Old Trafford after a major saga involving an explosive interview. United signed Wout Weghorst on loan from Burnley, but he ended up being used more as an attacking midfielder than in his traditional position. Marcus Rashford’s good form last season was essential to mitigate the lack of goals from other players, with the Englishman scoring more than 20 goals last season.
However, Erik Ten Hag publicly acknowledged that he was short of options at the top of the pitch, with the irregular availability of Anthony Martial. Initially, United considered bringing in striker Harry Kane from Tottenham Hotspur, but the excessive demands and the “behavior” of Tottenham’s board during the negotiations meant that the deal didn’t go through. United then turned their attention to Hojlund, who had been on their shortlist since last year.
Negotiations with Atalanta were swift, considering that the club had agreed personal terms with the Dane, who was eager to make the transfer. After a few days of back and forth over the transfer fee, the total package the clubs agreed on was 65 million euros, including add-ons. Hojlund has agreed a five-year contract with United, with the option of a further year. If the agreement is formalized, Hojlund will be able to play in the team’s last two friendlies.
