The Toronto Raptors, who have just lost point guard Fred VanVleet, are once again the subject of trade rumours, this time including star forward Pascal Siakam, whose future with the organization is uncertain. According to Sportsnet’s Michael Grange, Siakam’s name has been repeatedly mentioned in trade talks, with the Atlanta Hawks emerging as a strong candidate.
Siakam’s excellent performance in the 2022-23 season has further increased speculation about a deal. In 71 games, the 6’9″ forward averaged 24.2 points, 7.8 rebounds and 5.8 assists, earning him his second All-Star selection. However, Siakam’s current contract is coming to an end, sparking rumors of negotiations.
If Toronto decides to release Siakam, the Atlanta Hawks are an attractive destination. Although they have just parted ways with John Collins, the addition of Siakam to their roster, especially for Trae Young, should give them a big boost as they try to improve on their 41-41 record and first-round playoff loss to the Boston Celtics.
A major impediment to Siakam’s transfer is his long-term commitment. According to Bleacher Report’s Chris Haynes, Siakam declared that he would not re-sign with any team that acquired him, emphasizing his intention to remain in Toronto for the foreseeable future. This state reduces the value of your deal, as potential buyers see it as a rental item rather than a foundation on which to build.
The Raptors seem to be leaning towards a complete rebuild, having missed the playoffs in two of the last three seasons and finished the 2022-23 season with a 41-41 record, culminating in a play-in tournament loss to the Chicago Bulls.
Siakam is set to earn US$37.8 million in the 2023-24 season, cementing his reputation as a valuable trade asset. His NBA career got off to a slow start, with little playing time in his rookie year, but his contributions increased in his second season, with averages of 6.9 points and 4.0 rebounds per game. Siakam established himself as a force in his third season, with averages of 16.9 points, 6.9 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game, as well as being chosen for the NBA All-Defensive Second Team and nominated for the Most Improved Player Award.
Siakam is known for his versatility, as he is successful both on and off the court. In addition, his ability as a rebounder and passer increases his value.
