Spanish soccer legend Francesc Fabregas has announced his retirement from competitive soccer, with immediate effect. The former Barcelona player is hanging up his boots after a glittering career spanning almost two decades, in which he won almost every major trophy in European soccer. The midfield maestro was part of the venerable Arsenal Invincibles team that won the Premier League undefeated in the 2004/05 season. Fabregas later won world soccer’s top award when Spain emerged victorious at the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
After his second spell at Barcelona, Fàbregas moved to Arsenal’s rivals Chelsea, where he won two more Premier League titles. The Spaniard then moved to Monaco in 2019 after winning the Europa League, where he made 68 appearances, before securing a move to Como in 2022.
After his retirement, Fabregas will begin his career as coach of the B and Primavera teams in Como. The Arsenal veteran communicated his decision via a post on social media, thanking his family, friends and fans, as well as providing information about his future plans.
“It is with great sadness that the time has come for me to hang up my boots. From my first days at Barça, Arsenal, Barça again, Chelsea, Monaco and Como, I’ll treasure them all. From winning the World Cup and the European Championship to winning everything in England and Spain and almost every European trophy, it’s been a journey I’ll never forget.” wrote Fabregas.
“But it’s not all sadness, because now I’m going to cross the white line and start coaching the B and Primavera teams of Como 1907. A club and a project that I couldn’t be more excited about. So, after 20 incredible years, full of sacrifice, dedication and joy, it’s time to say thank you and goodbye to the beautiful sport” he concluded.
