After 10 games without a win, Vasco finally found success when they beat Cuiabá 1-0 at Luso Brasileiro in the 12th round of the Brazilian Championship. The decisive goal was scored by Jair, who converted a penalty awarded with the help of the video referee after Figueiredo was fouled. The win ended a run of six games without a win for Cruz-Maltino and took them to nine points, overtaking América-MG and moving out of the relegation zone.
Vasco had a slow start to the game, facing pressure from Cuiabá, who posed a greater threat in the first few minutes. However, as the match went on, Cruz-Maltino improved their performance, but struggled with their final pass, missing several opportunities. Goalkeeper Walter had a relatively quiet match, without having to make any notable saves.
The game opened up in the second half, with Cuiabá pushing forward and putting Vasco under pressure. Despite the increased pressure, it was Vasco who managed to open the scoring. Jair was fouled in the box, which resulted in a penalty, which he converted with confidence to give his team the lead. The help of the VAR ensured that the right decision was made.
Vasco’s next challenge will be a top-of-the-table clash against current league leaders Botafogo at Nilton Santos on Sunday (2) at 4pm. Cuiabá, meanwhile, will host Santos at the Arena Pantanal on the same day at 18.30.
