Manchester United are reportedly closing in on a deal for Chelsea’s Mason Mount, but when two of the Premier League’s biggest clubs are involved in a transfer of a top English talent, there’s bound to be plenty of drama. Mount is one of the players Chelsea are looking to sell to generate funds as they prepare for a new era under new manager Mauricio Pochettino.
Mount, being a highly sought-after name, has always attracted big names and both United and Liverpool were interested in the 24-year-old, but the England midfielder chose Old Trafford as his next destination.
Manchester United are in negotiations with Chelsea, who have been demanding a large sum, which has been a sticking point between the two parties. Initially, Erik ten Hag’s team presented a £40 million offer that was rejected by the Stamford Bridge club, and their latest offer of £50 million, presented earlier this week, was also immediately rejected.
It was reported that Chelsea were expecting something in the region of £70 million for Mason Mount, but now the deal could be done for between £60 and £65 million with United ready to submit a third offer.
The player, who has been capped 36 times at international level, has already agreed a £200,000-a-week contract with Liverpool.
Also, as the player exodus continues at Chelsea, with many high-profile names close to leaving the club, Chelsea recently announced the signing of Christopher Nkunku. The club is also likely to complete a deal to sign Nicolas Jackson from Villarreal, who has already activated his £30 million release clause.
On the other hand, the summer has been relatively quiet for Manchester United, who are also in the market for a striker, but both of their main targets, Harry Kane and Victor Osimhen, may be difficult to get hold of or may be too expensive. So they turned their attention to Atalanta striker Rasmus Højlund, who could be plan B.
