Former Barcelona captain Sergio Busquets has been officially confirmed as Inter Miami’s next signing, after the team acquired Lionel Messi, reuniting the legendary duo.
Busquets joins Inter Miami as a free agent after leaving his boyhood club 18 years later, moving to the Major League Soccer (MLS) club. The 34-year-old will play alongside his childhood teammate Messi, who also joined the club as a free agent after his contract with PSG expired.
Messi and Busquets spent 13 years together at the Camp Nou before the Argentine left to join PSG in 2021. During their period of incredible success together, the pair won three Champions Leagues, eight La Liga titles and six Copa del Rey titles.
The two players also received offers from Saudi Arabia, but opted to join the MLS club owned by David Beckham.
In his 18 seasons in Spain, Busquets has won everything the club and the Spanish national team have to offer, making 722 appearances for the Catalans, making him the third most capped player in Barcelona’s history.
The midfielder scored 18 goals and provided 40 assists during his time at the Camp Nou, as well as winning the World Cup and two European Championship titles with Spain.
He joined Barça as a teenager in 2005 and progressed through the youth ranks before making his first-team debut under Pep Guardiola in 2008, and the rest, as they say, is history.
What’s more, according to recent reports, the two legendary former Barcelona players could be joined by another former teammate, Jordi Alba. The left-back has become a free agent and, like Messi and Busquets, has also been tipped to join Inter Miami.
Although it is not yet known when Busquets will make his debut for the MLS team, club owner Jorge Mas confirmed that Messi will play his first game in an Inter Miami shirt next month, on July 21, in a League Cup match against Cruz Azul.
