In a swift move, Atlético-MG wasted no time in finding a new coach after terminating Eduardo Coudet’s contract. The club announced the signing of 74-year-old Luiz Felipe Scolari, marking his return to the helm of the team. Felipão has signed a contract with Galo that runs until December 2024. Previously technical director of Athletico-PR, Scolari left his post to take charge of the Minas Gerais team.
This is Scolari’s first term at Atlético-MG, and the club has chosen a coach with an illustrious track record. Felipão, a five-time world champion with the Brazilian national team in 2002, brings a winning profile to Galo. He is also a two-time champion and current finalist in the Copa Libertadores, which is the club’s main objective this season. The announcement of Felipão’s hiring on social media alluded to his World Cup title.
What’s more, Luiz Felipe Scolari is no stranger to the current Atlético-MG team. He has previously worked with several members of the team, including striker Hulk, who was part of the 2014 World Cup semi-finalist team under Felipão’s leadership.
Felipão, accompanied by assistant coach Carlos Pracidelli, is expected to arrive in Belo Horizonte in the next few days. He is expected to be at Atlético-MG’s disposal for the next match against Fluminense, on Wednesday, June 21, in Volta Redonda, in the 11th round of the Brasileirão.
Atlético-MG fans are eager to see how Luiz Felipe Scolari will lead the team and bring his vast experience to the quest for success in national and continental competitions. With his championship-winning credentials and familiarity with the key players, Felipão’s appointment generated enthusiasm and optimism among Galo fans.
